During my time as an HPD Patrolman in Downtown Houston, I witnessed the daily struggle of homeless individuals struggling with mental illness as they lived day to day in their own feces and urine. It was very sad for me to see them pacing endlessly up and down Main St. wearing down their tattered shoes while talking to themselves. The fact that these individuals are treated as less-than human is unacceptable. They have experienced all the seasons Houston has to offer first hand. Simply put, these individuals are cold in the winter and hot during the summer with no place to go for the comforts we often take for granted and due to the scarcity in resources, they sleep and eat when and where they can.

The Homeless Care Wash is meant not to cure their homelessness but to increase their standard of living just a little bit. The Homeless Care Wash will bring needed showers, clothing and blankets to homeless men and women who are truly in need of assistance.

If they are homeless for a season or for the rest of their lives, I believe that providing a shower and a change of clothing on a regular bases is the least we can do as a community.

Our mission here at The Homeless Care Wash is to take God’s love and provide it to those who are severely mentally ill and living in the Homeless community of Downtown Houston. The tangible aspect being that we will provide showers and clothing for those who desire it. If these individuals are without a home, let us intervene and show them some form of humanity, an ounce of concern, and just a moment of care.
